When the goal changes

You chose the goal. You're allowed to change it.

That can be surprisingly hard to accept when you've entered an event, told people, or spent weeks preparing. Time already invested can make the next step feel decided for you.

It isn't. You can look again at what you want and what fits now.

Work out what has changed

Perhaps the training takes more time than you expected. Perhaps chasing a pace has taken the pleasure out of running. Perhaps you'd rather walk, go with a friend, or give another part of life the space.

Be clear about health changes too. Pain, illness, or persistent symptoms need appropriate advice, rather than being treated as a question of wanting the goal enough.

Try separating the target from what you valued about it. You may no longer want a half marathon but still enjoy the long weekend walk-run. You may want to attend the event with company without chasing a time, if its rules and time limits allow that.

Let the new goal change the decisions

A different aim may need a different schedule. Open the current plan and look at its purpose, where you are in it, and what comes next.

You might continue because it still fits, choose another plan whose starting requirements match, or stop the schedule. Avoid joining bits of several plans together because the distances happen to look convenient.

If walking is now the goal, it doesn't need a running justification. If you're exploring a gentler structured introduction to running, Walk Run Achieve begins from about 15 comfortable walking minutes. Read its starting guidance before deciding whether it fits. It isn't a return-from-injury prescription.

Tell the people who need to know

A friend or coach can respond more usefully to a clear change: "I still want to come, but I'm no longer chasing that pace" or "I need to put this event aside."

You don't have to persuade everyone to want the same thing.

Finish two sentences: "I no longer need..." and "I still value..." Use the second answer to decide what happens next. Choose a first goal that helps can help at any stage.

And if the goal has simply finished, you can leave it there. There doesn't have to be another entry form waiting.
